Career Paths for Students with Gradruate Degree in Music

Most of the Jazz M.A. grad students get supervised experience teaching undergraduate music courses at Rutgers-Newark. This prepares  them for getting teaching jobs when they graduate. In addition, we  offer opportunities to publish to grad students who we judge to be  qualified for that. Most of our students choose to pursue part-time
teaching positions at colleges ((Ramapo College, Jersey City  University, College of New Jersey) and high schools, while they  continue to perform, teach private lessons, etc. A few choose to go on  for a Ph.D. (at (U of Michigan, CUNY, Harvard, Wesleyan, U of  Wisconsin, U of Texas/Austin, etc.) with the intention of securing a  full-time academic appointment upon completion. Most of these  graduates have published in one form or other, ranging from writing  for websites (Jazz.com, etc.) to publishing books with reputable  publishers (U of Michigan Press, Routledge, etc.)!

Several graduates have worked part-time at our own jazz archive (IJS)  on campus. And a few graduates have found unexpected careers with  their training. One used her training in writing and research to  secure a  full-time job as a reporter (not only music) at a local  paper. Using his research skills from our program, another works full-
time as archivist for the Metropolitan Opera!

Many of our graduate students take advantage of the opportunity to  work as interns off-campus. primarily at WBGO radio and at Jazz at  Lincoln Center.  Other internships are available, and students may  also initiate opportunities for internships.
