Urban Connections/Outreach

*Free and open to the public is the Department and MFA Program's The Writers At Newark Reading Series where eight prominent, very diverse writers of mixed genres, backgrounds and heritage are drawn from or passing through the NYC/NJ area. 

*Writers At Newark Reading Group
is open to 7-15 adults at the Newark Public Library. Honoria for the Series authors, book purchase for Reading Group members, stipend for MFA Reading Group Fellow will be provided should an ECLAMPA grant be successful. Affialted with The Writers At Newark Reading Series, Reading Group members woud be special guests at the series. Plans are under way to expand to libraries in other nearby communities.

*Reading Series' affiliate liaison with youth organizations, including GEAR UP, which supports low-income high school students aspiring to attend college in five NJ cities, including Newark and Jersey City.

*Affiliate liaison with North Star Academy, a nearby charter school, St. Francis Academy and St. Benedict's Academy. Planning with St. Phillips Academy is in early stages. Excerpts of books featured in the Reading Series are provided to teachers, who then feature the work in classes and accompany selected students to the readings.

*Affiliate liaison with the Newark Museum. Following a sucessful guided tour hosted by the Museum for MFA students and the Series readers whose writing related to the exhibition, India: Public Places, Private Spaces: Contemporary Photography and Video Art, plans are underway to continue such interconnections.
